The New Vanguard

Bright Ideas presents…

The New Vanguard: Ending gang and youth violence in Nottingham.

The event will take place on Tuesday 21st February 2012, 10am-2pm (including lunch) at the Indian Community Centre, 99 Hucknall Road, Carrington, Nottingham, NG5 1QZ.

Trish Adudu, TV and Radio presenter and debate show host

Aim: 

To gain sign up for the new multi-agency strategy to tackle gang and youth violence.

Objectives:

  • Launch Vanguard Plus
  • Introduce and sign up individuals and agencies to the new strategy
  • Agree how community, voluntary, and non-statutory organisations can be meaningfully represented on the programme board
  • Identify funding and resources available to tackle the issues
  • Share good practice and what works in Nottingham

Speakers:

  • Councillor Alex Norris, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety
  • Councillor David Mellen, Portfolio Holder for Children and Families

Women Leading for a Change – ‘Leading from the Margins’ Event

The next unit for the course Women Leading for a Change is ‘Leading from the Margins’. The inspirational event for this unit is on Thursday 2nd February 2012, 10am to 12.45pm. It will be held at Play works, Alfred Street North, St Ann’s, NG3  1AE.

Inspirational speakers will share their experiences and take your questions:

  • Bea Tobolewska (Chair), Manager, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum
  • Raffia Arshad, Barrister, St Mary’s Chambers
  • Chief Inspector Linda McCarthy, Nottinghamshire Police

Plus a chance to find out more about the programme and about other learning and volunteering opportunities in Nottingham. Light refreshments will be provided and reasonable travel expenses will be refunded.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Today is Chinese New Year and everyone here at Bright Ideas would like to wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year. Every Year Chinese New Year falls between 21st January – 21st February,  depending when the new moon of the first lunar month falls. This year it is the year of the dragon, specifically the water dragon, the dragon represents great power.

Leadership, Faith, Culture and Identity Workshops starts on Wednesday!

On Wednesday 18th January, Thursday 19th January, Wednesday 25th January and Thursday 26th January 2012 are the workshops for Women Leading for a Change for the unit Leadership, Faith, Culture and Identity. The workshops are running 10am – 12.45pm at the Vine Community Bobber Mill Road, NG7 4EQ. These workshops are free however, booking is required. To book your place contact Shazia Khan. Leading from the Margins

 Is there power in the margins of society? What human rights issues affect women? How can women be heard? Learning from inspirational women who have led for social inclusion. 6th February and 7th February 2012 Sessions run from 9.30am to 3pm Playworks, Alfred Street North, St Ann’s, NG3 1AE

Preparing to Lead

A set of workshops for women who want to lead. E.g. you may want to set up a new group, or join a management committee or board or improve the way an existing group operates. 28th February, 29th February, 1st March, 2nd March 2012 All sessions run from 10.00am – 12.45pm Central Library, Angel Row, City Centre Nottingham, NG1 6HL.

Advocacy In Action presents Ours For The Taking – a FREE workshop

On January 31st 2012 Advocacy In Action presents an event called Ours For The Taking, which is a FREE workshop for community and voluntary sector groups. This event is at the Nottinghamshire Deaf Society, 22 Forest Road West Nottingham NG7 4EQ. This workshop will be exploring questions such as:

  • What do we need to know about the personalisation agenda?
  • Who qualifies for personal budgets?
  • What services can be provided to individuals?
  • How can we gear up to become providers of services?

 

Guest speakers will include

  • Julie Cassidy Gosling, Director, Advocacy in Action.
  • Reshma Patel, Service User Consultant, Knowledge is power.

Women Leading for a Change

The course Women Leading for a change is now on its second unit, Leading Against the Tide. Tomorrow will be the 3rd workshop in this unit, if you were unable to make this unit do not worry, follow live on the blog at http://womenleadingforachange.org/.

The next unit is Leadership, faith, culture and Identity. The Inspirational event is on 12th January 2012, 10am to 12.45pm Vine Community Centre, Bobbers Mill Road, NG7 5GZ.

There is no booking for this inspiring event so just come along to find out what this unit is all about!

The Workshops for this unit are on, 18th January 2012, 19th January 2012, 25th January 2012 and 26th January 2012.

DAIN VOLUNTEER COURSE

Once again we have a full house.  This Digital Activist course is fantastic.  A wonderful group of learners who are going to be out in the community volunteering their time at various locations helping people to get online and widen their horizons.
